Graduate Student Society

The Graduate Student Society (GSS) acts as advocate and representative for the interests of SFU's grad students. The GSS is your student government; each month, we hold meetings with representatives from each department to discuss student issues and concerns. As a member of the GSS, you are also entitled to all the services we offer, including: 

 

  • The GSS Advocate - a confidential service available to assist graduate students who may be facing difficult, confusing or upsetting situations, such as: Failing grades or unsatisfactory progress, Suspension, Supervisor issues, Academic misconduct, and more.

Christina Batstone, our Advocate, works one-on-one with students to answer questions, give advice, attend hearing with students, help seek out information, as well as many other tasks based on the specific needs of each case.  The Advocate is independent of the University and treats all conversations, emails, and information as confidential.

Dean of Graduate Studies

The Office of the Dean of Graduate Studies is here to help you with academic issues regarding your graduate program. They will be able to provide information to both prospective and current students concerning tuition fees, entrance scholarships, research, thesis defences, and much more. Ombudsperson

The Ombudsperson can assist students who are experiencing difficulties or are involved in disputes with the university, their department, or members of their supervisory committee.  The role of the Ombudsperson is to ensure that all members of the university community receive fair and equitable treatment on campus.

SFU International

SFU International offers many programs and services to international students, including a student mentorship program, assistance for exchange students on issues like class enrollment, and advising services. They also offer a day-long International Graduate Orientation at the beginning of the semester, which covers a range of topics from general questions regarding culture and lifestyle in Canada to visas, work, and academia. Student Learning Commons (SLC)

Workshops

There are many workshops available on a variety of topics. For grad students, SLC offers assistance with theses writing and research, creating presentation posters, The Grad Cafe, a weekly workshop designed to help students for whom English is their second language develop oral proficiency in English, and much more. Personal Consultations

SLC offers free one-on-one consultations for discussing learning strategies and skills for effective writing. Each student is entitled to 6-hours-per-term of booked appointments with a maximum of one hour of booked time per week; if you reach your 6-hour maximum however, you are still welcome to visit the SLC during drop-in hours. To book a personal consultation, you must register with the SLC to use their online booking system.

 

Print and Online Resources

The SLC offers many information resources on topics like exam preparation, time management, note-taking, and listening skills. Please visit the SLC website (see above) for complete details. Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC)

Archives and Records Management Department

The SFU Archives and Records Management Department supports the University's academic and administrative programs by acquiring, preserving, and providing access to important archival research collections and university records of enduring value and use.  The Archives offers reference services to assist faculty, students, researchers, and administrators in the identification and use of primary sources of information.  It also aids in the management of the University's current records, and provides advice and guidance to faculty and administrators on compliance with provincial and federal legislation in the areas of records management, freedom of information, privacy protection and copyright.
